RESEARCH ACTIVITIES
-
PRINCIPAL RESEARCH INTEREST
Analytical Chemistry, Environmental chemistry, Agricultural chemistry, Pesticides and Biopesticides, Industrial chemistry, and Physical chemistry.
Currently involved in the analysis and testing of biopesticides and anti-malarial for heavy metal content.
My research interest is in Analytical Chemistry in the area of atomic spectroscopy, molecular spectroscopy, and chromatography.
-
Molecular Spectroscopy
Development of fluorescence labels which are cheap and photostable. This will facilitate the determination of non – fluorescent compounds by fluorescence method involving the derivatization of such samples. Fluorescence technique is becoming more popular due to its high sensitivity, versatility, and simplicity of instrumentation (e.g. simple Fluorimeters).
Interfacing flow injection analysis (FIA) system to the mass spectrometric detector, UV/VIS spectrophotometric detector, fluorimetric, and thermal conductivity detectors. FIA technique would be used to generate vapor/gaseous analyte on-line. Vapour or gaseous analytes will be separated by a dual-phase diffusion unit containing microporous PTFE membrane for separation of phases. The separated gases/vapors will be introduced into suitable detectors such as thermal conductivity detector (TCD), mass spectrometer (MS) for quantitative analysis.
Alternatively, the generated analyte will be absorbed in a suitable absorption medium followed by an on-line reaction with a fluorescence label or suitable derivatizing agent for fluorescence and UV/VIS spectrophotometry.
-
Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy
Although atomic absorption spectroscopy is the method of choice for trace metal analysis, the sensitivity of the method is affected by the presence of interference. The research in this area will be geared towards improving the sensitivity of this method. This can be achieved by using a flow injection system in which the ion exchange column is incorporated to trap the analyte of interest and to reject the interfering substance (preconcentration of the analyte).FIA will also be used as a sample introduction technique for AAS.
-
Chromatography
The chromatographic technique will also be employed for the separation of various analytes including medicinal and environmental analytes. Liquid Chromatographic technique (HPLC) would be interfaced with the FIA system for carrying out pre-column and post-column derivatization of samples. Coupled systems such as GC-MS, GC-MS/MS, and HPLC-MS will be used for the analysis of a variety of samples.
-
Electroanalytical Technique
Our interest is in developing a cheap portable detector for elemental analysis at the site where sampling of environmental samples is taken. The answer to this problem is thought to be an electrochemical technique (voltammetry) coupled to the flow injection system for automation of sample introduction step. The success of this project will allow analysis to be carried out on-site within the shortest time possible. There will be no need to carry the sample from the sampling site to the laboratory during which the sample may be degraded.
-
Water and Soil Analysis
Determination of nutrients such as Nitrates, Phosphates, and Potassium in water and soil samples by modern instrumental methods. Determination of Heavy Metals using Atomic Absorption and Emission Spectroscopy.
For domestic and irrigation use (applies to Water Analysis)
-
Analysis of Pesticide Residues in Environmental Matrices and real samples such as Honey: using GC, GC-MS, GC-MS/MS, HPLC/MS, and HPLC-MS/MS
-
Analysis of Atmospheric Pollutants especially Primary Pollutants such as Particulate for Heavy Metals, Sulphur Dioxide, Carbon Monoxide, Oxides of Nitrogen for monitoring air quality, and their effects on the Environment.

EQUIPMENT ACQUIRED FOR THE DEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY
Instruments acquired for the Department of Chemistry, JKUAT include Pocket/ Simple spectrophotometer/ instrument for determination of micronutrients and macronutrients involving the formation of colored samples using suitable reagents. The instruments and accessories (reagents) were gifts I was given during Pittcon 2012 Conference and exposition held in Orlando, Florida, the USA in March 2012. These items were handed into the Department of Chemistry to be used for research by students undertaking chemistry. The instrument is suitable for the analysis of samples in the field where sampling is performed.

CURRICULA DEVELOPMENT AT DEPARTMENTAL LEVEL
2011 Member of Departmental Committee Developing MSc Analytical and Environmental Chemistry Syllabus.
2006 – 2008: Secretary/ Member of the Departmental Committee on Development of BSc in the Medicinal Chemistry syllabus.
2006 – 2008: Convener of Departmental Committee on the syllabus review for the BSC course in Analytical Chemistry.
2000 – 2003: Member of the Departmental Committee for reviewing the ADP Industrial Chemistry syllabus.
INNOVATION AND PRODUCTS
Involved in research to isolate and characterize the active ingredients (antibacterial agent in honey that contribute to its medicinal property). The ultimate goal is to produce a product/ drug derived from honey that would be used for the treatment of patients for a variety of ailments.
Development of flow injection/ gas diffusion interfaces for the generation of gases/vapor and subsequent introduction into various detectors. These interfaces take advantage of flow injection technology which includes high sample throughput, high reproducibility of results, and low cost of materials required. Also, a gas diffusion unit is used for phase separation.
COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT
I am a member of Christian Evangelical Fellowship.
2005 – To Date: Organizing Committee member for the construction of a residential building for orphans at Rambira Mission, Kendu Bay.
